The first of a series featuring tracks reminiscent of the raw grooves of NY house in the 90's. This four tracker is full of fat bumpy grooves that comprise some excellent floor fillers. On the a-side "Freaky" is a highly energetic house groove, quite raw with a characteristic "stab" carrying the listener throughout the track. A drum roll announces the arrival of Swiss artist and producer Andri to the Highgrade family. And the drums are something we can take literally, as the regular player on the Zurich party scene experimented for seven years with his own drums. "There Is No Place" the percussion is delicately layered and the groove is suitably enhanced before the final breakdown, which somehow evokes thoughts of the Greek coliseum and fanfares announcing the final battle. This is a corker, you cannot ask for more. A killer house groove - beautifully produced and striped back to just the essential elements... this is a monster that ought to keep all the die-hard Trapez ltd fans happy. If you have not had enough of the track, watch out for Hugo's remix. His remix shows great appreciation for the original but catapults the voice into the sky and makes a disco novelty out of it. The b1 track "Materialistic" keeps up that kind of house feeling, jitters and quivers alongside small bits of vocals and thunders of delays and walking basslines. This track has a nice Detroit feeling to it somewhere along the bassline and chords it makes Blake Baxter come alive. The track was produced together with F. Grant. The digital bonus remix comes from Citizen Kain & Ohuture who have recorded before for MBF. Their remix is a heavy bass driven monster, grinding like a caterpillar with metallic percussion. An additional remix was done by the new talents form Cologne Intuitiv who set forward a pretty good production, bassline driven and funky in the way they treat the vocal. A. With the release of his fourth album, “GENERAL ECLECTICS”, on September 11th THOMAS BRINKMANN breathes new life into his stellar side project SOUL CENTER. Preceded by a short and sweet preview of part one (GE 01), available on vinyl from July 2nd, the record shows the Rhine-based expressionist at his peak – and Berlin-based label SHITKATAPULT feels privileged to release the entire series! Don’t be mislead by the album’s title, though. Taken literally, GENERAL ECLECTICS will lead you astray not once, but twice. While the cover might allude to local noise merchants EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN’s infamous HAUS DER LÜGE sleeve and PAOLO UCCELLO’S horse’s rear, the album’s inner sleeve is covered in maps, footballs, cigarette butts, priests … each replete with their own rich history. Take the ashtray, for example: a work of art in itself („Mein Kippenberg“) that is both light-hearted and laden with meaning. It is Brinkmann’s sense of appropriation (the eclectic side of things), his interpretation of art/music/ image/sound, that provides the red thread to connect the individual parts – and concept – of this album. Unlike SOUL CENTER’s previous works, the featured music is almost entirely devoid of samples and returns to a deep melange of techno’s richer funk and soul flavours. Seriously – this is funkier than anything we have heard in ages. The area around the fabulous Hundertquadrat Club in Rosenheim (Bavaria) will start their own vinyl & digitallabel in March 2010. The "Hundertquadrat" is recently one of the most sucessful clubs in south Germany, regularly international DJ´s, et. al. We thought we'd fallen into a wormhole and woken up in '92 ! 2020 Soundsystem's enduring LP favourite and one of the live show's highlights gets put through the downtown NY meat-grinder by TBD. Brought on board as prospective remixers after last year's immense All Ears distributed 'What Is This' the TBD duo have taken this one on a three-day bender across the big apple ! Pablo Mandelbrot claims to be from Bar Harbor, Maine on the North-Eastern coast of the U.S.A. When asked about his upbringing he mentions various occupations including sardine canner and quota negotiator as well as hinting at some dark years spent working in the aqua-culture industry. About his music he says little, summing up his productions with the cryptic declaration: "Disco is a deep sea". We are not entirely sure where or when the two tracks on this 12" were recorded and the only information from Mandelbrot himself is that he has sometimes collaborated with the late Conny Plankton (who also engineered these two tracks), a legendary figure of the Maine/Nova Scotia electronic music scene. Pablo also insists that both tracks are "under exclusive license from Lob-Starr Records", although we have never heard of this label and their representatives have yet to contact us. "There Is No Place" the percussion is delicately layered and the groove is suitably enhanced before the final breakdown, which somehow evokes thoughts of the Greek coliseum and fanfares announcing the final battle. This is a corker, you cannot ask for more. A killer house groove - beautifully produced and striped back to just the essential elements... this is a monster that ought to keep all the die-hard Trapez ltd fans happy. If you have not had enough of the track, watch out for Hugo's remix. His remix shows great appreciation for the original but catapults the voice into the sky and makes a disco novelty out of it. The b1 track "Materialistic" keeps up that kind of house feeling, jitters and quivers alongside small bits of vocals and thunders of delays and walking basslines. This track has a nice Detroit feeling to it somewhere along the bassline and chords it makes Blake Baxter come alive. The track was produced together with F. Grant. The digital bonus remix comes from Citizen Kain & Ohuture who have recorded before for MBF. Their remix is a heavy bass driven monster, grinding like a caterpillar with metallic percussion. An additional remix was done by the new talents form Cologne Intuitiv who set forward a pretty good production, bassline driven and funky in the way they treat the vocal. A. At Night was originally released by Shakedown in 2002. Later on, acts like Alan Braxe, Mousse T. and Martin Buttrich produced remixes. The "Chab Deep Mix" was a digital-only release via Panorama Records in 2008. A friend of 200 heard the song at a Hawaiian sail rave and posted it on Facebook. 200 Records fell in love with the track and decided to release a vinyl version. When the then still young Frankfurt label Cocoon Recordings discovered the long-playing format with its Compilation A in Summer 2000, probably nobody could have, even approximately, foreseen the success story of this series. For ten years now, the cocoon-style declination of the alphabet is a guarantor for high-class and exclusively produced floor burners by the international Techno and House elite, and, beyond that, a reliable indicator for the stylistic bandwidth of contemporary electronic dance music. And even with the previous editions A to I having set the bar damn' high, the J edition starts with a true musical sensation, as the opener "Cocoon Dark Dub" comes from nobody less than Moritz von Oswald. "Those who - even just rudimentary - have followed the evolution of electronic music over the last twenty years, know about the outstanding importance of von Oswald's timeless classics like "Domina", "M-4" or the whole Basic Channel series. Insofar, "Cocoon Dark Dub" is maybe the nicest birthday present at all, and an absolute honour for our label." (Sven Väth) So, initially, it's the heartbeat of Dub Techno that pulsates through a lonely piano and noise fractals, and club world keeps its breath for a good eight minutes. However, the Compilation J literally puts out all the stops over the following 110 minutes playtime and shows what modern electronic dance music has to offer in these times. The Dial impresario Pantha Du Prince from Hamburg is celebrating crystalline ice dance ("Bolder"), while Cécille label head Nick Curly, with his sensual Tribal House, is feasting the most compact form of Disco Boogie that one can imagine ("Keep On"). With "SBooty", the Kompakt ambassador DJ Koze, also from Hamburg, is flabbergasting the audience by combining virtually incompatible elements.
